Weather Forecasting
Droughts
- Hunger Stones reveal to the people of central Europe just how low the waters have gone in the past, and indicate that waters this low lead to famine.
Flooding
- Nilometer for predicting and measuring the depth of the Nile River during flood stages in Egypt. These devices / spaces meant that Egyptians knew how much flooding meant they wouldn't get enough new soil for crops, how much meant good crops the following year, and how much meant that the infrastructure along the farms would be wrecked by the flooding.
- Flood plaques in Rome, Italy, describing the heights of various major floods of the Tiber dating from the 1400s forward.
- Tsunami Stones in Japan mark the heights of various tsunamis over the centuries and act as reminders of how high the waters have come before. This, hopefully compels folks to build on higher land.
