Beta readers are the people who read your story or manuscript before the editors get a hold of it and point out the big (and small) problems in the story. They're not editors - and they're not copy editors - so try not to give them a crappy manuscript.

Delilah S. Dawson suggests asking your beta readers the following 10 questions:

  1. When did it lag?
  2. Did the end satisfy?
  3. Were the characters believable?
  4. What didn't work?
  5. Would you buy a sequel?
  6. What didn't ring true?
  7. What's your biggest complaint?
  8. Did the pacing work?
  9. What would you change?
  10. Can I buy you a coffee?
